During
the Blyth shows I stayed just outside the city limits of the
nearby Goderich at The Bluffs Motel which had been listed in the
show premium. I think this hotel is something of a
tradition for dog show exhibitors attending the Blyth circuit.
I think most of the 20 or so rooms were taken by dog folk, some
of whom I recognized from Sarnia. I had Golden Retriever people on one side of my room and Standard Schnauzer people on
the other side!
This older "L" shaped drive up to your room motel
reminded me of 1950s -60s America (as I have seen it in
pictures, of course!) All the room windows were open when
I arrived (it did get quite pleasantly cool at night) and each
individual room had its own window unit A/C. Each of the
rooms had a bench outside the door so you could sit outside the
room in the evenings and chat with your new neighbors (and
people did this too!) The window in the bathroom was open to the
sight of a golden wheatfield not 20 feet away. One
huge plus for this motel was the grassy acreage with shade
perfect for dogwalking directly beside the parking area across from the rooms.
Another plus was what I think was a reasonable rate (I think
about $65 + tax Canadian per night. However, there was an
unanticipated minus here or there too. Imagine my utter
surprise when there was a sign by the bathroom sink which said
that the tap water was 'Not Potable'! Each room had its
own very flyswatter, obviously to battle those unwanted
intruders inviting themselves in through the open windows.
And I never could get the TV to play more than one channel. .
.and it wasn't CNN. So my three days at Goderich were
spent blissfully ignorant of global happenings in general.
By the time I left The Bluffs, it was my 6th straight dogshow
and my 8th day on the road and I was so tired (but happy), I
didn't much care.
